I am a four-footed nocturnal animal. So while Anna of Anna's Adornments is sleeping, I have snuck into the room where the computer is in order to participate in Mrs. Jenny Matlock's Alphbe-Thursday Rainbow Summer School Extravaganza.

My choice of colour is the song 'Colors of the wind' from the movie Pocahontas. This movie is about a native American girl who lived about 400 years ago in what became Jamestown in Virginia.

It is such a romantic story. I cried the first time the two-legged kits played it on the movie-box. My two-legged Mommy has explained the story this way:

It is the conflict between the white settlers from England who have come to claim the land that is already inhabited by a copper-coloured people that the English call 'Indians'. In the middle of this conflict, the cheftan's daughter, Pochontas, falls in love with the ship's captain, John Smith.

John Smith is taken prisoner by the natives for a crime he did not commit. And just before John Smith is to be executed, by having his head bashed in, Pocahontas comes to his rescue, by putting her head over his and telling her father that he has to kill her first and that she loves him. Pocahontas' father, Chief
Powhatan, cannot kill his own daughter.

Powhatan has a change of heart and spares the life of John Smith. It is also the spirit of Pocahontas' mother in the form of a wind, that blows new thoughts into his head. But before this dramatic scene, Pocahontas and John Smith meet in the forest and talk about what they think is important. This is Pocahontas' reply to John Smith when he implies that she and her people are savages:

What you mean is...not like you.
You think I'm an ignorant savage,

And you've been to so many places,
I guess it must be so.
But still I cannot see, if the savage one is me.
How can there be so much that you don't know;
you don't know.

You think you own whatever land you land on,
The earth is just a dead thing you can claim.
But I know every rock, and tree, and creature,
has a life, has a spirit, has a name.
You think the only people who are people,
Are the people who look and think like you.
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger,
You'll learn things you never knew you never knew.
Have you ever heard the wolf-cry to the blue-corn moon?
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grins?
Can you sing with the voices of the mountain?
Can you paint with the colors of the wind?
Can you paint with the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden pinetrails of the forest,
Come taste the sun-sweet berries of the earth,
Come roll in all the riches all around you,
And for once never wonder what they're worth.
The rainstorm and the river are my brothers,
The hare and the otter are my friends,
And we are all connected to each other,
in a circle, in a hoop, that never ends.

How high does the sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you'll never know.
And you'll never hear the wolf-cry to the corn-blue moon.
For whether we are white or copper-skinned,
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountain,
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind.
You can own the earth and still all you'll own is earth,
Until you can paint with all the colors of the wind.

Please note that Stephen Schwartz wrote the words to this lovely song and the music was composed by Alan Menken.

Tomorrow, I am going to post the Swedish translation (not mine, but Monica Forsberg's) of the song as well as a Swedish translation of the opening story. I do the best I can typing with paws.

det finns mycket mer kunskap än du tror;

Du hör nog aldrig vargen i månens ljus,

Please also note that this film has been critised by the Powhatan Nation and the descendents of Pocahontas for not being historically accurate. For the sake of fairness, you may want to read what Chief Roy Crazy Horse has to say about this film.

I'm just a cat. Take this song for what it is, a song about colour and my find for the end of Rainbow Summer School
.
